Today, the 27-year-old Albanian, who a year ago killed a 21-year-old Greek woman in Thessaloniki, appeared in the Greek Court.
The 27-year-old Albanian is accused of the criminal offense of driving the vehicle resulting in the death of the young girl.
In front of the judges, he appeared remorseful, as he stated that Ema got in front of him in the car. Although he braked, he stated that he could not avoid the serious incident.
"I'm sorry for what happened. She suddenly appeared on the street and I didn't have time to see her. I was going 55 km/h. I saw him for two seconds, I pressed the brakes, I turned the wheel to avoid him", he said apologetically and described that he had come to Greece from Albania 13 years ago, while he did not have legal residence documents, nor a driver's license.
Speaking to protothema.gr, the mother of the Greek student demands exemplary punishment for the 27-year-old defendant, who last November killed the 21-year-old in an accident.
"I expect and hope for a truly exemplary punishment. I ask for nothing more than the conviction of the accused and his sentence," said Emma's mother. According to the Greek media, she has stated that she is not interested in hearing any apology from the 27-year-old.
The prosecutor of the case highlighted the uncontrolled flow of the car before dragging the 21-year-old who tried to cross the opposite side of Egnatia, on a road that at that time had no vehicle traffic.
"The fragments were found in the center of the countercurrent, which proves that the impact took place there and the windows were broken. This point is after about fifteen meters from where the vehicle starts to deviate. The fragments are somewhere in the middle which means the car is fifteen meters ahead and not because the pedestrian got out and lost control. He entered the opposite current and during the uncontrolled slide to the side, he found a pedestrian who was crossing the road at that moment. In other words, the pedestrian was not the cause of his change of course.
The defendant did not want to describe to us the reason why he lost control of the vehicle. He tried the brakes, the acceleration, he didn't know how to drive, he saw that the next traffic light would catch him, was it abstract? This has not been clarified. The fact is that the reason why he turned left was not a pedestrian who was in front of him and lost control. The path was fifteen meters away. She was actually crossing a road on an empty road, she was crossing it carelessly because there were no cars coming out of the stream she was crossing. The street was completely empty", said the prosecutor, rejecting the claim of the accused, who said that the 21-year-old woman jumped a meter in front of him.
"She was thrown a meter away, the defendant told us. If we consider that he did not have suicidal tendencies. Is it possible to throw a pedestrian in front of the only car on an empty street?", the public prosecution emphasized.
Regarding the abandonment, he said that the accused tried to disappear and after taking a turn, according to eyewitnesses, the Albanians returned again and hit the 21-year-old who was lying on the asphalt.
