General Director of the State Police, Skënder Hita

The Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, stated today that there has been no ban on entry into Albania against VLEN MP, Adnan Azizi, and the Deputy Secretary General of the Government of North Macedonia, Hasim Murtezani.

According to Hita, the three people who had diplomatic passports were not prevented by Albanian border authorities, but chose not to continue their journey, as the person accompanying them was unable to cross the border due to legal obstacles.

"Four people presented themselves at the border crossing, three of whom had diplomatic passports. They were informed that they could enter the Republic of Albania, while a person accompanying them, who had legal obstacles at the border, was unable to travel to Albania. In this context, the three people refused to continue and returned to North Macedonia," Hita declared.

The reaction of the head of the State Police came after claims by the VLEN Movement, an Albanian party part of the government in North Macedonia, that the coordinator of its Parliamentary Group, Bekim Qoku, MP Adnan Azizi and Hasim Murtezani were detained for about an hour at the border without receiving an official explanation, even though they had diplomatic passports.

VALEN requested clarification from the Albanian authorities, claiming that there was a ban on the officials from entering Albania, but without being communicated any official decision or document.

"According to information communicated unofficially by the border police, there is an entry ban against them. However, no decision, document or justification has been made known to them. VLEN requests the authorities of the Republic of Albania to inform the public opinion whether such a measure really exists. If so, who made this decision, on what legal basis it was based and what are the concrete reasons for such an action against elected officials and institutional representatives. Inter-Albanian relations should be built on transparency, institutional respect and clear communication, not on unexplained bans and procedures that leave room for suspicion," the VLEN statement reads.

The clash between VLEN's claims and the State Police's explanations continues to raise discussions about the procedures followed at the border point and the reasons that led the three officials to not continue their journey to Albania.
