A warning from the United States Embassy in Tirana about potential risks has brought attention back to relations with Iran and security in Albania.
According to the announcement, groups linked to Iran may target entities linked to American interests or the Iranian opposition based in Albania.
Analyst Albatros Rexhaj considers the warning an expected action by the US authorities. He emphasizes that the dissemination of information aims to increase public awareness and at the same time signals that the US structures are aware of the developments. According to him, the US has an obligation to inform its citizens in cases where it has data on possible threats.
In this context, Rexhaj links the situation to the tense relations between Albania and the Iranian regime. He makes a distinction between the government in Iran and the population, assessing that a large part of Iranian citizens do not support the current political system.
The analyst places this development in a broader international context, where he notes rising global tensions. He argues that in such scenarios, countries face strategic choices and clear positioning in the event of clashes.
Rexhaj: There is a real danger that must be reacted to. With this announcement, the US raises the awareness of the people, but also shows the other side that we are aware. Also, they remove responsibility in relation to their citizens. If the US has information that something could happen to its citizens, they have an obligation to share it. It is not surprising, Albania is treated as an enemy state by Iran. I am talking about the Iranian regime because the Iranian people today are no different from the Albanians of the 80s in Albania. They live in a regime that they do not love, although there is also a part of them who support the regime, but the majority does not love that regime.
The world today is heading towards an escalation, Albanians should not be afraid, they should get used to these things. And in such situations, one must choose a side because if one stays on the sidelines… There are people who say that “politics is irresponsible” or “why are they involving us in the war”. The war will happen, whether we want it or not. We can determine whose side we will be on if there is a clash.
