The former director of Durres prison, Indrit Cerloj, has been released from detention by decision of the Durres Court, which has imposed the security measure "house arrest" on him.
The request for mitigation of the measure was argued with the fact that there is no risk that Cerloj will influence the destruction of evidence. The decision was made by judge Xhevdet Lika.
Cerloj is accused of the criminal offense of "abuse of duty", following the escape of detainee Altin Ndoci on January 13. The latter left during an escort to the hospital for a health check, contrary to procedures, without security measures such as handcuffs and under weak supervision.
According to the investigation, Cerloj had immediately approved the documentation for another visit by Ndoc to the Durrës hospital, citing kidney pain, without verifying whether a check-up had been performed beforehand by the institution's doctor and without guaranteeing compliance with the rules of accompaniment.
Other people are also under investigation for the same charge: head nurse Aulon Çuko and the head of the Health Service, Ylfete Sema, who are under "house arrest." Meanwhile, the former head of the Prison Police, Dezdemon Pazaj, and the two officers who accompanied Ndoc on the day of the escape remain in custody.
Altin Ndoci, suspected of being part of an armed criminal group in Elbasan and accused of murder, was assessed by the prison commission as a person without a high risk of escape, a decision signed by the now-arrested director.
The escape occurred after Ndoci asked to use the toilet in the Infectious Diseases ward, from where he left by hitting the two accompanying police officers. Outside the hospital premises, he left in an "Audi A7" vehicle in an unknown direction.
