Lawyer Redi Ramaj has reacted sharply to the arrest of his colleague, Ulian Bajrami. He said that this situation belongs to a practice from the communist period.
Ramaj commented on the incident that occurred in the Elbasan Courtroom, where a debate between a prosecutor and a lawyer about evidence in a case ended with the latter's arrest.
Lawyer Ulian Bajrami was arrested 24 hours after the clash, on charges of "threatening in the course of duty", "opposing and striking a judge" and "threatening a judge".
"It had been years since I heard phrases like those from the communist era in an Albanian court, where the prosecutor decided in the courtroom who would be arrested. These are reminiscences of a cultural backwardness," Ramaj told "A2 CNN".
He added that his colleague only reacted after being made aware of tampered evidence. The lawyer stressed that arresting him for such a statement is an abuse of power.
"That lawyer was in the exercise of his duty, protecting the interests of his client. Filing a criminal complaint is a legal remedy, while arresting him for such a statement is an abuse of power," declared Redi Ramaj.
According to Ramaj, the use of the measure of arrest in this case is "abnormal" and seriously damages the image of Albanian justice.
