The Tirana-Durres highway, one of the country's main arteries, has long since become a daily hell for thousands of drivers. With potholes appearing daily, destroyed asphalt, and inevitable traffic jams, this vital road segment has become the clearest example of infrastructure abandoned by the state.
After many complaints and public reactions, the government has finally acknowledged that the situation is urgent. The Albanian Road Authority (ARRSH) has announced a special tender worth 77 million lekë, around 770 thousand euros, for the urgent reconstruction of the most damaged segment: Vorë – Dajlanit Bridge. In this section, according to the ARRSH, the damage includes reticulation, deep potholes and deep degradation of the subgrade. “The asphalt concrete and binder layer is worn and reticulated on about 25% of the surface and the bituminous conglomerate layer is damaged on about 30%,” the official document states.
The technical intervention will include scarification (removal) of damaged layers, restoration of the binder and carpet with specific thickness (6cm + 4cm), as well as the application of horizontal signage with bicomponent paint. The most affected segments are located at the exit of Vora, the entrance-exit of Gjiri i Lalzi, at Bistro Sukthi and the Shkozet overpass – areas that cause irritation, accidents and endless delays every day.
Ironically, the emergency tender comes at the height of the tourist season, when traffic on this axis reaches its peak and any delay in the works could bring increased chaos. Now it only remains to be seen whether this intervention will be truly “urgent” or another cosmetic maneuver to silence angry mouths.
