BIRN: Medical students end the boycott, after the "pact" with the

Medical students stopped the boycott of the academic year on Monday after a month, after the rector of the University of Medicine accepted their demands expressed during the protests and suspended the implementation of the law that forces them to sign work contracts until the decision of the Constitutional Court.

The students have sued the law passed in Parliament on forced labor in the country after graduation, as a violation of the constitution.

"Today, a meeting was held between the medical students and the rector's office, where the students requested that no contract be presented to them until a final decision of the Constitutional Court, a request which was accepted by the rector of the University of Medicine, prof. Arben Gjata", Kristi Trako, representative of medical students in the UMT Academic Senate, told BIRN.

The protests of medical students have started since June when there was talk of the possibility of a draft law that would force them to work in Albania for at least five years after graduation, this draft law which was then approved in Parliament on July 21, 2023.

After almost a month of boycott by the students, the rectorate has also agreed on the replacement of these lost learning days.

"The rectorate has given a guarantee that a plan will be prepared to replace the lost hours, and that a meeting with the Ministry of Education will be held, but there is still no set date for the latter", the president further stated. National Student Board Gevio Tabaku for BIRN.

On the other hand, the students have agreed to return to the auditors, but always keeping in mind the rector's promises.

"There is a kind of trust in the institutional response, but it will still be under the spotlight all the time," Kristi Trako told BIRN.

According to Gevio Tabak, if these points are not respected, the students will return to the boycott and its escalation./BIRN
