Regarding Prime Minister Edi Rama's proposal for harsh sentences for arsonists, lawyer Kreshnik Spahiu said he was in favor and supported it, but recalled that the laws are not enforced and the criminal record shows it in numbers.
For him, even a life sentence should be imposed for arson as a serious crime, but justice should act and so should line institutions for violations of this legal nature.
Spahiu also brought examples from the criminal and legal practices of advanced Western countries, where life imprisonment is also provided for arsonists, such as the USA or Great Britain.
" I have listened carefully to Prime Minister Rama's proposal on the criminal status and punishments for arsonists and I know the Criminal Code very well. We have only 2 convicted in two decades. There are countries that have the crime of arson as their object, such as Germany, Great Britain, or the USA, for example, where there are massive arsonists, which in their legislation provide for life imprisonment, just like criminals or perpetrators of murder. Therefore, I think that Prime Minister Rama's proposal is right. Given that Albania has a bigger problem with arson than Britain and Germany, it is normal that it also has criminal punishment ," he told "Report TV".
However, he is skeptical about the implementation of the law, because it could happen like with other laws that have been made for the environment or waste, for example, and no one is convicted.
" But I am skeptical because even if you impose the death penalty, if the law is not implemented and the institutions are indifferent, including justice, then we do nothing but fail. I am in favor of toughening the Criminal Code, should they be sentenced to life imprisonment? Absolutely yes ," he said.
