Funeral ceremony for Fatos Nano, tributes begin at the Palace of Congresses

A public ceremony has begun at the Palace of Congresses in Tirana in honor of former Prime Minister Fatos Nano, who passed away at the age of 73.

Numerous citizens are paying their last respects to the historic leader of the Socialist Party, while the casket arrived in the lobby of the Palace of Congresses at around 08:15.

Present are Fatos Nano's family members, including his wife, Xhoana Nano, son Sokoli, and ex-wife Rexhina.

Starting at 8:30, public tributes will be held in honor of the historical leader of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano. Then, from 11:15-11:45, tributes from state figures and the diplomatic corps will take place.

A member of Nano's family will give a speech, as well as the Prime Minister of the Republic, Edi Rama, who is Fatos Nano's successor in this party. The ceremony will also be attended by political figures from Kosovo.

In respect for his contribution to the public and political life of the country, November 2nd has also been declared a national day of mourning. All flags in state institutions will be lowered to half-mast and at 12:00 all activities will stop to observe a minute of silence.

Finally, with honors, Nano's body will depart at 12:05 from the Palace of Congresses to his final resting place, which will be in Sharra. The family has requested to perform the Orthodox ritual service for Fatos Nano, who was baptized and married to Xhoana in the Albanian Orthodox Church, in private, at home.

Fatos Nano passed away on Friday, October 31, in a private hospital in the capital, where he had been staying for 24 days. His health condition had deteriorated significantly after chronic respiratory problems. He recently suffered a cardiac arrest and then clinical brain death.

Meanwhile, earlier, Prime Minister Edi Rama shared a photo of the historic leader, Fatos Nano, who passed away on October 31.

"Farewell Fatos Nano," writes the head of government.

Rama will also deliver a speech in honor of former Prime Minister Nano.
