'Corriere della Sera': Edi Rama, the prime minister who loves Italy!

The prestigious Italian "Corriere della Sera" has dedicated an article to the profile of Prime Minister Edi Rama, starting from the time he became the mayor of Tirana in the 2000s, until he then took over the leadership of the government. In its article, the newspaper focuses on the prime minister's relationship with Europe, but without leaving out of focus his actions that often attract the attention of the international media; like wearing ties and sneakers and often awkward meetings with European leaders at international summits.

When Edi Rama became mayor of Tirana in the late 2000s, when the city was sad, gray, in need of color and above all the river Lana had to be cleaned by demolishing the illegal buildings that had been built there, someone started to feared for his physical safety. According to them, this big man of more than 2 meters was going against the small and big local powers. Above all, he wanted to win over a system that for a decade had been based on extreme illegal construction and corruption. Not only in the capital, everywhere in Albania.

However, Rama already knew something about threats and violence. After months in which he contested in newspapers both parties that arose after the dictatorship – the Democratic (centre-right) and the Socialist – in 1997, some men nearly beat him to death in front of his house. Rama had no doubts about the leader (the then president Sali Berisha, head of the DP, whom he always denied) and after a short period in Paris to recover and do the things he liked (painting) , returned to Tirana. Meanwhile, the situation had changed a little. The socialist government called him to become the Minister of Culture in 1998 and in 2000 Rama was elected by 54% of the residents as the mayor of the Albanian capital. When he started to restore the 'face' of the city, someone also shot at the window of his house, without injuring anyone.

The best president in the world

Four years later, with dozens of buildings repainted in even the most curious ways and with unprecedented attention from the Western media, Rama was recognized as the first best citizen in the world by the "Mayor of the World". And from there the rise to the head of the government has become unstoppable, also because of his pro-Western approach. Edi Rama, writes wikipedia, born as Edvin Kristaq Rama - where Kristaq is his father's name -, 59 years old, "is an Albanian politician, former basketball player, teacher, painter and publicist, current prime minister of Albania in office since September 2013".

"Memes" on Instagram

Married twice, with two children, the head of the Rama Socialist Party in recent weeks is enjoying the country's success in the tourism front, with tens of thousands of Italians who have "invaded" the beaches of the country of eagles attracted by curiosity and above all by prices stable. So much so that on Tuesday evening he also published a "meme" on Instagram, a photo montage, where with two photos of the landing in Bari of the ship "Vlora" in 1991, he compares Italian tourists with Albanians who landed in Italy after the dictatorship.

ACTIVITIES

Very active on social networks - "My government lives in modernity and uses all means of communication", he always says -, with an opposition that is trying to find its leader of reference, the Albanian prime minister has become known abroad from one side for gestures that contradict the trend of the time (he was the first in the world to guarantee asylum for Afghan refugees after the return of the Taliban) or the direct line with Serbian leaders even in the midst of tensions with Russia and Kosovo, and from the other for the "artistic" side such as the absence (in most cases) of ties, sneakers, video-selfie in front of the government building in Tirana with the then prime minister Matteo Renzi, the very loving hug with the current prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, last June at the summit of the European Political Community in Moldova. He was also one of the leaders present at Silvio Berlusconi's funeral.

Marrëdhëniet me Evropën

Legacy

Joining the European community is probably Rama's last challenge before leaving politics. Those who know him well explain that they want to be remembered not only for what lifted the country up, but also for what brought it into safer and more reliable hands: those of the European Union. Officially, the Albanian prime minister has not appointed a "successor", he is known to be very strict with all his ministers, but all eyes are on Erion Veliaj, 43 years old, mayor of Tirana since 2015, former minister of Social Welfare and Youth, having studied abroad and with an enviable network of international recognition. And, of course, a lot of social activity./ Corriere della Sera
