New railway line

On December 1, 2023, it was the "Pamphlet" that announced the passage of the railway from Shkodra....

The Serbian lobby has not been able to change the plans for the construction of a Durrës-Prishtina railway line that includes parts of it and Shkodra.

The Minister of Infrastructure in Kosovo, Liburn Aliu, has announced that there is already a final track of the railway connecting Kosovo with Albania.

" It's very good news that we finally have a bilateral agreement on the route of the railway that connects Kosovo with Albania ," Aliu announced.

He said that already the works will begin intensively for the realization of the project.

" In accordance with our commitments after the feasibility process has started, intensive work will begin towards the realization of one of the largest infrastructure projects that will connect not only citizens, but also the economy of our countries and beyond" , he added.

On December 1, 2023, there was a " Pamphlet " that wrote how Serbia is lobbying against this plan. Serbian academic circles have raised the alarm that the old Austrian idea will be reactivated, for an infrastructural corridor from Shkodra to Gjakova, which passes through the Drin valley. Corridor, which represents a super powerful economic potential, as it connects an area, which in the past, namely in the 18th and 19th century, has been the greatest economic power of the entire Western Balkans.

This corridor has shown its strength, even when it was reactivated for a few years after a violent destruction that took place after the fragmentation of the Albanian lands in 1913. During the Italian and German occupations, i.e. from 1939-1944, which of course were not full years, the exchange and trade in the Shkodër-Gjakovë corridor along with its alpine belt grew exponentially, which significantly increased income, well-being, and primarily the amount of trade volume.

Prime Minister Rama also spoke today at the meeting with journalists, saying that the railway will have a line change, which will pass from Shkodra, Gjakova and finally to Pristina.

" There are intensive communications with Kosovo regarding the progress of the Durrës-Prishtina railway, there is an agreement from both sides to explore a change of line passing from Shkodra to Gjakovë and Pristina, this is a solution desired by the Kosovo side as well " , declared Rama.

The contract with the winning company that will develop the feasibility study for the Durrës-Tirana railway has already been signed and its final value is around 202 million Lek or around 2 million Euros including value added tax.

The approximate cost of the Durrës-Prishtina railway is estimated at 700 million euros.
