The symbolic message in the protest

The citizens' protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office in Tirana continued today, while this time a symbolic message appeared in the square on behalf of the Albanian diaspora and young people who have left the country.

In the middle of the protest, empty chairs were placed, on which were displayed posters with the inscriptions “Emigrated to England”, “Emigrated to Belgium”, “Emigrated to Austria” and “Emigrated to Germany”. The symbolism was intended to represent young Albanians who have emigrated in recent years and who are unable to physically be at the protest to express their positions.

According to the protesters, the empty chairs represent the absence of an entire generation that has chosen to leave Albania due to economic and social conditions, while also demanding more attention to the phenomenon of immigration.

The protest, which began after incidents during an action against the Kushner family resort in Zvërnec, has turned into a civic movement that has been ongoing for 12 days. During this period, citizens have raised concerns related to the economic situation, social conditions and governance of the country.

Participants also expressed dissatisfaction with the political class as a whole, while demanding changes and more accountability from state institutions.
