Skanderbeg Square today became an oasis of coolness for hundreds of citizens trying to escape the scorching heat. Tirana is experiencing a record hot day, with temperatures reaching 43 degrees Celsius during the afternoon, seriously endangering the health of citizens, especially the elderly and children.
Citizens have been seen filling water fountains, wetting their faces, hands and even cooling themselves off in an attempt to mitigate the effects of the heat wave. Many have chosen to limit unnecessary movement during the most critical hours of the day, while pharmacies report an increase in sales of anti-dehydration solutions.
Meteorologists warn that this heat wave could last for several more days, urging citizens to avoid midday sun exposure and to take special care of children and the elderly. Meanwhile, the municipality of Tirana is appealing for the most efficient use of public water points and increased care for people in need.
