Fourth day of unrest in France, protesters clash with police and loot businesses

Young rioters clashed with police and looted shops on Friday night in a fourth night of unrest in France sparked by the killing of a 17-year-old teenager by a police officer after he was pulled over for a search.

The tragedy has piled more pressure on President Emmanuel Macron after he called on parents to keep children indoors and blamed social media for fueling the violence.

While the situation seemed somewhat calmer compared to previous nights, riots engulfed several cities across the country.

Firefighters in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, where the shooting took place on Tuesday, put out flames ignited by protesters who left charred remains of cars strewn across the street. In the neighboring suburb of Colombes, protesters overturned rubbish bins and used them as makeshift barricades.

Looters in the evening broke into a gun shop and made off with guns, and a man was later arrested with a shotgun, police said, and in Marseille, officers arrested nearly 90 people as groups of protesters torched cars.

Buildings and businesses were also vandalized in the eastern city of Lyon, where a third of the roughly 30 arrests made were for theft, police said. Authorities reported street fires after an unauthorized protest drew more than 1,000 people earlier in the evening.

At around 3am, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told cable news channel BFMTV that 471 arrests had been made overnight. The video published on social networks, showing the murder of 17-year-old Nahel.M., caused outrage in the suburban neighborhoods of Paris where racism is more pronounced.

Nahel's funeral is scheduled for Saturday, according to Nanterre mayor Patrick Jarry, who said France must "push for change" in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

Despite the government's continued calls for calm and stricter policing, Friday also saw brazen violence during the day. An Apple store was looted in the eastern city of Strasbourg, where police fired tear gas, and the windows of a fast-food outlet were smashed in a shopping center in the Paris area, where officers pushed back people trying to enter a closed store. authorities said.
