For many years, Mira Murati has worked "behind the scenes" of OpenAl, overseeing the development of products such as ChatGPT and DALL-E.
She has now been appointed as the company's interim chief executive. She took over on an interim basis shortly after the board fired Sam Altman.
Many world media, including the great American newspaper, the New York Times, have dedicated an article to the Albanian engineer, recognizing her contribution in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
Mira Murati, born in Albania and educated in Canada, is a mechanical engineer who joined OpenAl in 2018.
It is reported that before joining OpenAl, she was part of the Tesla company, where she played a key role in the development of the Model X car and Leap Motion, the newspaper further writes.
Mira joined OpenAl when it was a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that general artificial intelligence benefits humanity.
"What could be more inspiring than the rise and growth of the collective intelligence of humanity", she had said at the time.
Initially, she was a member of the management team and was tasked with executing the board's decisions throughout the company.
It later took responsibility for the distribution of the image generator, DALL-E, and the text generator ChatGPT, which attracted millions of users after its launch last year.
Although she has held the title of chief technology officer since last year, current and former employees said Murati had been functioning as the company's chief operating officer. She made sure her engineers developed timely versions of ChatGPT.
She also handled the company's relationship with Microsoft, an investor and partner that has deployed OpenAI's technology and helped shape its AI policy in Washington and Europe.
"She has demonstrated an ability to build teams with technical expertise, commercial acumen and a deep appreciation for the importance of the mission," wrote Satya Nadella, Microsoft's chief executive, in an article about her for Time magazine. "As a result, Mira has helped build some of the most exciting AI we've ever seen."
Otherwise, until the next decision of the company, Mira Murati will continue to be the chief executive of OpenAl.
