The Ministry of Justice has officially submitted the extradition request for former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj. The latter has been abroad since July 2023, while according to reports, the extradition request has been sent to Switzerland.
This was announced by special judge Irena Gjoka during the hearing on what is known as the 'Buka' file, for which the former Deputy Prime Minister is accused by SPAK of abuse of office with economic damage of 7 billion lek.
During the session, it was decided that this process will continue in the absence of the subject, while the defense lawyer of the former Deputy Prime Minister said that there is no security measure for Ahmetaj regarding the case in question.
"The extradition request has nothing to do with this case, as there are no security measures against Ahmetaj for the process in question," said lawyer Henrik Ligori.
On the other hand, SPAK prosecutor Elvin Gokaj has filed a request for trial, while requesting that 14 people be questioned.
In public reactions, the former Deputy Prime Minister has rejected SPAK's claims that led to the filing of charges against him.
Ahmetaj stated that "the case of "Buka" sh.a. is one of the few times in a privatization procedure where the state's shares are not only preserved, but increase several times in value, or in other words, the state benefits from more income."
Listing the stages of the privatization procedure, Ahmetaj underlines that the only act that was overturned by the Administrative Court in this procedure is the assessment of the independent expert on the percentage of shares.
"The question is, is the Minister responsible for the assessment of the authorized accounting expert and the valuation expert? No. The Law on the Privatization of Companies in Non-Strategic Sectors clearly states the procedure and the assessment. In 2018, upon the disclosure of the Court's decision, as Minister, I ordered the repeal of the auction procedure of 18.06.2015. This is where my knowledge of this procedure ends, as I have been removed from the position of Minister of Finance since January 2019," Ahmetaj explained in his reactions regarding this issue.
