A preliminary hearing is expected to take place today at the Special Anti-Corruption Court (SAC) for the file of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj.
The trial panel, after reviewing the defense arguments of Veliaj's lawyers and the other defendants involved in the same case, will decide whether or not the case will proceed to trial.
Let us recall that the previous hearing was postponed because the lawyers had not prepared the defense for Veliaj, his wife, Ajola Xoxa, and the other suspects.
SPAK, through a public response on December 5, 2025, stated that the trial has been delayed due to the postponement of eight hearings, which, according to the justice institution, were caused by the unjustified absence of defense lawyers and their unfounded requests.
Veliaj has been in custody since February 10 of this year, accused of money laundering, failure to declare assets, passive corruption in 9 cases, abuse of office, and bringing prohibited items into the cell.
His wife, Ajola Xoxa, is accused of failing to declare assets, concealing income and money laundering, while the file also includes former MP Klotilda Bushka for actions that hinder the discovery of the truth. The latter requested this Friday to dismiss the case.
In July of this year, the Supreme Court decided not to change the measure against him, leaving the Appeals Court's decision in force. Meanwhile, on November 3, the Constitutional Court ruled by a majority vote in his favor, returning him to the position of mayor of the largest municipality in the country.
