Just a few weeks after the start of the conflict in the Middle East, the effects have begun to be felt in Albania, mainly in the fuel market, where oil prices have entered an upward trend.
Discussions have also focused on whether fuel that was previously purchased at lower prices but is now being sold at a higher price is being sold on the market. However, according to experts, the factors influencing the price increase are broader and directly related to global developments.
Economic expert Enio Civici points out that the increase in oil prices would occur even without the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, due to the nature of the conflict.
"Despite the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, the increase in oil prices would be reflected again, because the war is taking place on energy reserves and production capacities," he said.
He explains that a large part of the price of fuel in Albania is related to the fiscal burden: "About 50-60% of the price of oil that we pay are taxes."
According to Civic, the price structure is divided between imports, taxes and company profits.
"80 lek is the import price, 70-90 lek are taxes, 15-20 lek is the company's profit margin ," the expert told "Tv Klan".
He emphasizes that one of the main reasons why Albania has higher prices compared to the region is the way the sales tax is applied. "There is a reason why we have it so high, because we have the sales tax included in the price. I believe tomorrow we will have an official announcement... there are four interventions that have been made in the EU or even other countries," he added.
Enio Civici listed the main measures being discussed: transparency and limiting profit margins, reducing excise duties, support for the most affected sectors such as transport and agriculture, and finding alternative markets.
