Tributes are being held in the lobby of the Palace of Congresses in honor of Judge Astrit Kalaja. Judge Kalaja was shot dead two days ago in the courtroom of the Court of Appeals while on duty.
This is a serious event not only for justice, but also for the Albanian state, a crime scene that highlighted the major shortcomings of the legal system and security in the country. The tributes began at 09:00 and are expected to end at 11:00. The figure of Astrit Kalasa will be honored by state figures, colleagues, friends and family, who will give him their final farewell today.
In his tribute to the late judge, the president of the Chamber of Advocates, Maks Haxhia, stressed with deep concern the grave situation in the Albanian justice system.
"This is not just a tragic event, but a murder of the justice system," Haxhia told the media. "It's not just about boycotting for the sake of boycotting, but this alarm must stop, which affects the system, from the highest judge to the simplest lawyer. A deep hatred has been planted in our society towards people of justice, which must be eradicated as soon as possible."
He highlighted that the fear in the system has become so great that a judge confessed to him that "they have ambushed us."
"This is a clear message that shows that we need drastic measures to get out of this difficult situation. It is not only a matter of judges, but also of lawyers who must deeply analyze their role and responsibilities in this process."
Maks Haxhia described Astrit Kalaja as "a family man and very humane, who represented the best values of the justice system," adding that his loss is a great blow to all justice professionals in Albania.
"This event should be our call to all: lawyers, judges, and every actor in the justice system. The people should know that in a legal process, half of the parties will lose, therefore we must try to preserve the dignity and safety of all actors in this process," concluded Haxhia.
