The "Fredi Beleri" issue threatens Greece: Albania has scored an own
George Gerapetritis

Greece continues to threaten Albania regarding the issue of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, who is in prison for stealing votes.

The Foreign Minister of Greece, Georgos Gerapetritis, in an interview for the state channel ERT, has long dwelled on all the current issues of Greek diplomacy, giving special importance to the Beleri issue.

Specifically, the Greek Foreign Minister has considered the position of the Albanian side as "an own goal" using the traditional Greek expression "apparently Albania is shooting itself in the foot".

Gerapetritis in his statement referred to the handling of the case by the Greek government, once again supporting the position that "the detention of Beler is illegal and violates the rule of law".

Furthermore, he added that the Greek government has undertaken a series of initiatives not only for the release, but also for the swearing-in of the mayor, stressing that these lead to an escalation of the situation and increased tension.

"With the way the Albanian side is acting, it is probably shooting itself in the foot (scoring an own goal)", said Gerapetritis, warning that if Fredi Beleri is dismissed from his post, then we will be headed for a serious deterioration of Greek-Albanian relations.

The Greek Foreign Minister pointed out clearly that there is no chance for Albania's EU membership process to continue with such a violation of the rule of law and the presumption of innocence of Fredi Beleri.

Finally, the Greek minister added that the Albanian side's handling of the issue constitutes a serious obstacle on the path of Albania's integration towards the European family and that the created tension is not at all beneficial for the neighboring country.

We remind you that this is not the first time that Greece has threatened Albania regarding the "Fredi Beleri" issue.

The elected mayor of Himara has been arrested and is in prison after being accused of buying and selling votes in the May 14 elections. Beleri was arrested in his bar while trying to buy 8 votes for 400 thousand old ALL. Along with him, his accomplice, Pandeli Kokaveshi, was also imprisoned, as the latter was released at the beginning of June, due to his health condition.
