Former Foreign Minister Arian Starova commented on the importance of NATO and the role of the US in strengthening the Alliance.
Invited to the show 'Log.' on News 24, Starova emphasized that America is working to better engage European defense power within NATO to face current threats, such as the war in Ukraine.
He added that Donald Trump has emphasized that Europe should pay more than 2% to contribute to common defense, as wars are costly.
According to Starova, this is not about dissolving NATO, but about adjusting some of its elements related to strengthening the Alliance. He emphasized that Europe must pay more to be stronger and thus be able to face threats, including the Russian threat, while also having a deserved response if necessary.
" NATO is very important to the US. America is thinking about how to better engage European defense power within NATO to face risks. Trump has said that Europe should pay more than 2 percent, as wars are costly. Some ideas have been floated, but there is no talk of dismantling NATO.
"This alliance is very valuable and will continue, but some elements related to the power of the Alliance are being adjusted. European countries are being encouraged to pay more, because the risks are such, as happened with Ukraine. By doing this, we can then be in conditions where Russia can threaten Europe, but it can also receive the deserved response, if Europe becomes strong ," Starova said.
