
In May 1968, France was paralyzed by very violent protests. The tensions had begun in 1967, when students at the Nanterre campus of the University of Paris rebelled against restrictions imposed on dormitories, which prohibited male and female students from sleeping together.
Soon the unrest spread, and the youth's frustration with a society that had remained in their past, pushed them towards the "Third World" – an anti-imperialist ideology that emphasized solidarity with the global south and developing countries, which is reflected in Maoist and Vietnamese iconography, which is also seen in this photograph.
