Albania's picture of 35 years of democracy, young people want to leave,

More than willingly... in need of leaving, many problems carried over and few, almost non-existent alternatives. This "8th of December" finds young Albanians with this mix of feelings, who continue to stand in front of the doors of embassies to leave, often without returning.

"We move wherever we want and we keep coming back to the same reasons. Employment, standard of living, higher wages. All of these... It's an economic issue, so to speak. It's not a desire that makes us leave the country. We are forced to," some citizens tell A2CNN.

Data from the Institute of Statistics shows that in the last decade alone, the number of young people up to the age of 29 has decreased by 314 thousand. From almost 720 thousand in 2015, there are now fewer than 41 thousand young people in the country.

"It is very incoherent and very disturbing. Nowadays, there is a lot of talk in the media, not only Albanian, but also foreign, that young people are increasingly moving from our country, from Albania. It is a deep wound," two girls emphasize.

Protests are still taking place today. Just as peacefully... even silently. Almost for the same reasons as 35 years ago, but in a different form. Young people are expressing their frustration by abandoning their homes.

Eldisa Cirogu, a sociologist, says: "It's a form of surrender. We are feeling the effects. It's not a perception. We are facing a demographic crisis. We will probably suffer a social crisis. This is because policies are lacking."

Young people who are not in employment, education or training represent one of the country's biggest social challenges today. In 2024, over 22 percent of young people aged 15–29 were neither in employment, nor in school nor in education.

Translated into economics, this means fewer workers, shrinking incomes, and more pensioners and payments from the state budget.
