The mother of 2-year-old Leo has spoken out about the tragic incident in which he lost his life after being attacked by a pit bull that his family had adopted at their home on the island of Zakynthos in Greece.
She says she is shocked by the incident, adding that everything happened in less than 30 seconds, attributing the attack to the terror the animal felt after hearing gunshots and whistles from the hunters.
"Leo was every mother's dream, he was the sweetest child you could imagine," 32-year-old Robbie said in an interview with the Daily Mail.
"We used to say that even people who didn't like children adored Leo because he was so sweet. He was special and everyone loved him, his father, me, the whole family," she continues.
Robbie, who settled in Zakynthos while growing up in Andover, Hampshire, married to a young man of Albanian origin, speaks of a beautiful little boy who never stopped laughing and filled his family with happiness.
"He loved the animals we have here, and we have a lot of them: cats, horses, dogs," she adds.
According to the mother, the pit bull had not caused any problems until Saturday, adding that "everything happened within 30 seconds."
"My husband had rescued the dog and it was tied up in the garden, with a ten-meter chain, near the forest where they were hunting at the time. You could hear gunshots, there were other dogs and the hunters were using whistles. I think that scared the dog and made it attack," she says.
She even describes her son's relationship with Leo, stating that 'we've never had any problems with the dog since we got him.'
He would let Leo tickle his belly, pet him; lick his face. He had never shown aggression. Leo played with him the whole time. Something just exploded inside him and within 30 seconds of us going in to fix the food, Leo came out to look at him. Then it was all over. Leo got caught or shocked. It looks like he only bit him once ,” the mother concluded.
