The Guard treats the media like the opposition, tries to prevent the reporting

Today, political journalists addressed a letter to the Speaker of the Assembly, the Minister of the Interior, the head of the Guard and the US, OSCE, EU and British embassies, complaining about the arrogance of the Guard of the Republic. The guards in the Parliament are obstructing the work of journalists, violating the freedom of reporting. For this reason, journalists have asked for measures to be taken.

Full letter

dear,

Wishing you good work, we, the Community of Political Reporters, would like to share with you a problem encountered for a long time, but recently, it has become even more disturbing and has made it difficult to exercise our role during the plenary sessions and parliamentary committee meetings.

We have noticed an increase in the number of Garda employees monitoring the courtyard of the building where the plenary sessions take place, who:

- They are committed to giving arbitrary orders to media workers, not allowing us to freely shoot, report or interview, these acts are contrary to the regulation of the mass media that the Parliament of Albania has and they do this by exercising physical force against journalists and operators.

-Different Guard employees have different opinions about where journalists and cameramen should stay, ordering unjustified relocations.

- They prevent journalists from taking statements freely and on the move outside the building.

- Journalists are prevented from entering the Parliamentary Committees on time, preventing us from documenting the events, be it the failure of the committees or the actions in the corridors of the Assembly.

All of these create unnecessary conflicts and tensions during almost every plenary session or committee work, which the press office of the Parliament has been constantly informed about.

For the above, in order to avoid further misunderstandings, we ask for your intervention, for the clarification of the employees of the Guard and the officials of the Parliament of Albania to guarantee everyone's safety without affecting the work of the media.

We, the media workers, enter only through the main gate and are subject to physical and vehicle searches as well as specialized dog checks.

It is a fact that in no case has any problem been created by media workers who have endangered the safety of legislators.

Therefore, in conclusion, we request:

-Allowing any media operator to stand/move freely without any restrictions in all the outdoor areas of the courtyard of the building where the plenary sessions take place.

- Allowing journalists to take interviews without obstacles outside the building, without the intervention of the Guard of the Republic.

-Allowing media workers to leave freely from all the gates of the institution, maintaining unchanged the entrance only from the main control gate.

- To maintain a restrained and non-provocative language by the employees of the Guard, who can communicate with journalists and operators only through the press office of the Assembly.

- To allow journalists to enter the Presidency of the Assembly 10 minutes before the official schedule announced for the holding of a committee, in order to witness the quorum, the dynamics and the reasons for the holding or not of such a meeting.

Hoping for your cooperation, thank you.
