Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni arrived at Mother Teresa airport (11:24 am) to inspect the immigrant centers being built by the Italian government in Albanian territory.
The works for the reception center in Shengjin were completed a day before Melon's visit, where the two counterparts are expected to hold a press conference.
Meloni and Edi Rama will visit the Gjadri area in Lezhë, which covers the Italy-Albania cooperation protocol on migration issues. Here, 30% of the works have been completed so far.
Then, at 12:00, the Rama-Meloni conference will be held at the reception center in Shengjin.
The measures to guarantee the safety and smooth running of the activity started on Monday, as Italian police officers have already arrived at the Port of Shengjin.
According to the agreement, the landing port will be Shengjini, where the first center will be set up that will serve for the identification and registration of refugees, while Gjadri will be the camp for their accommodation while waiting for answers to asylum requests. The reception center will have a capacity of 3,000 places, while at the end of the evaluation procedures, the Italian authorities will remove the immigrants from the Albanian territory at their own expense.
The protocol between Albania and Italy for immigrants has been pushed forward amid many debates and contestations from the politics and oppositions of both governments.
The opposition in our country has described it as unconstitutional with the claim that it violates the territorial integrity of the country, while in the neighboring country there has been talk of inflated figures that will burden the budget, without solving the real problem of illegal immigrants.
