Former German ambassador found dead in hotel room, initial suspicions

Former German diplomat Werner Daum was found dead in the hotel room where he was resting.

The 82-year-old former ambassador, who served in Albania over 35 years ago, was found dead this morning by the hotel's cleaner in the Golem area.

Initial suspicions are that the victim suffered a heart attack, while he was previously being treated for heart problems and taking appropriate medications.

Werner Daum served as Germany's ambassador to Tirana from 1987 to 1990, in a crucial period for the country's future.

Daum was ambassador at the time of the July 2 exodus, when he had instructed the Embassy staff to keep the doors open, welcoming as many Albanians as possible.

Daum was returning to Albania after 35 years, where he lost his life on Saturday morning.

"I adored this country, because it is wonderful. But, perhaps even more, I adored its people. And I felt, I perceived for almost a year, since the beginning of 1989, that the conditions for a revolution were ripe. The people had changed. They were no longer totally afraid of the regime's reaction.

"Almost every month I felt more and more that spirit of rebellion, that desire to break free from oppression. The desire to live freely, to be free to meet others, to travel abroad, to improve economic conditions, all this was growing not gradually, but in giant steps," said Werner Daum in an interview given to Top Channel shortly before his death.
