The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime has postponed the trial of the mayor of Roskovec, Majlinda Bufi, on charges of "using public office for political or electoral activity" to May 21.
The decision came after the defendant was not present at the hearing. Through her lawyer Klodian Skënderi, documents and travel tickets were presented, which, according to him, proved that Bufi was outside Albania as part of a workshop.
The lawyer argued that her presence at this stage of the process is considered necessary, as the case is at the moment of presenting the defense's final conclusions.
"Because we are in the phase of the defense's conclusions, the defendant wishes to be present," Skënder declared before the trial panel.
The mayor's trial has been postponed several times before. In the previous hearing, the court warned that the continued delays and lack of preparation could be interpreted as a lack of will to defend herself, and the verdict would be announced.
Meanwhile, the Special Prosecution Office has requested that Majlinda Bufi be found guilty on the charge of “using her office for political and electoral activities.” SPAK has requested that she be sentenced to one year in prison, with a possible conversion to two years of probation.
