Former Minister of Defense Fatmir Mediu has reacted through a post on social networks regarding the trial that is taking place within the framework of the investigations into the "Gërdeci" case.
Mediu said that the tragedy cannot be undone, as he added that justice can never be just, if it does a new injustice.
According to him, until now the judicial process has focused on the testimonies of family members who have lost relatives or former employees, ex-military specialists in the Gërdec factory and that no witness has given even the slightest testimony against him. He added that at no time did he break the law.
" Dear friends. These days, but especially today, after the court session, there has been an interest from the media who want to know my assessment of the process with the indictment of abuse of office in the case of Gërdec. There is no political interest, process, reward or punishment that undoes the tragedy, where 26 people lost their lives and this was the reason I resigned as Minister of Defense.
But justice can never be just, if it does a new injustice. Until now, the judicial process against me has focused on the testimonies of family members who have lost relatives or former employees, ex-military specialists in the Gërdec factory.
Witnesses have been called by the prosecution, but, so far, not a single witness has given even the slightest testimony against me. The prosecution witnesses have proven that I had nothing to do with the implementation of the process. They have claimed that I have never been to the dismantling factory or had any relationship, even spontaneous, with those involved in this process.
Zero responsibility! Because as Minister of Defense I have not violated the law, I have not favored anyone, I have respected the opinion of military experts and the Chief of Staff. In my duty, I was guided by the state's public interest, not by private interest. Regarding the (il)legality of the process, I would like to point out that justice can never become such, when its purpose becomes politics or the manipulation of public opinion and not the implementation of the law and the Constitution. We will have occasion to talk more about this another time. I am determined to defend my fair and legal decisions ", writes Mediu.
