An international investigation has been launched for several weeks on the suspected trafficking of toxic waste from Albania to Thailand.
The Secretariat of the Basel Convention raised the alarm and requested the cooperation of the Albanian authorities.
The Anti-Traffic Directorate at the Albanian Customs is working closely with OLAF (European Anti-Fraud Office) to advance this important investigation.
From the investigations so far, it appears that a suspicious load of 100 containers has been identified, which left the Port of Durrës with two ships at the beginning of July and was transshipped in the ports of Trieste and Piraeus, being loaded on other transoceanic ships to continue to other ports with final destination Thailand.
The cargo is suspected to be dust from electric recycling furnaces, a hazardous waste containing toxic metal oxides such as cadmium and chromium, which are harmful to health and the environment.
News of this toxic waste trafficking was made public by Bloomberg News and Asian media, which raised the concern of the Basel Action Network, a well-known international environmental organization.
Meanwhile, sources from the structure that is investigating the case in our country informed TCH that it is being investigated not only on the exporting subject and its activity, but also on those who are responsible for granting authorization for exports.
The investigation is still in progress and sources involved in it say that there are positive developments, but that they cannot be made public yet, as they may affect the progress of the investigation, while the ships are still sailing.
Next week, the ships Maersk Candor and Maersk Campton are expected to arrive in Singapore and from there the cargo will sail towards Thailand as the final destination of the suspected cargo with over 800 tons of toxic waste./ TCH
