Hydropower plants of the Drini cascade near maximum quotas, discharges begin in

Heavy rainfall and unpredictable flows from side rivers have led to a significant increase in water levels in the Drini cascade hydropower plants, bringing them close to the maximum permitted quotas. As a result, the Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) has started controlled water releases from the Koman and Vau i Dejës hydropower plants.

At the Vau i Dejës hydroelectric power plant, only one turbine has been put into operation, which is discharging about 500 cubic meters of water per second, in order to manage flows and maintain the safety of the dam.

Meanwhile, the situation is also tense at the Koman hydroelectric power plant, where the water level has been continuously increasing. To cope with this situation, discharges have begun through two gates, in order to avoid exceeding safety quotas and guarantee the normal functioning of the power plant.

According to official sources, current discharges are mainly dictated by lateral flows, while the Valbona River is bringing significant amounts of water to the Drini cascade system, directly affecting the increase in levels in the reservoirs.

The Fierza hydroelectric power plant, the largest in the country, is currently at a height of 280 meters, out of the 296 meters that is the maximum allowed capacity. According to KESH, Fierza is operating within controlled parameters and does not pose a risk at the moment.

Authorities indicate that the situation is being continuously monitored throughout the Drini cascade, with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of energy works, as well as protecting surrounding areas from any potential flood risk.
