Writer Lea Ypi has offered an extremely sober assessment of what the growing sense of abandonment and political exclusion that a significant portion of society experiences can produce in Albania.
Asked whether this accumulation of anger among those who feel powerless and unheard could be transformed into a new political or social movement, Ypi said that the space for truly transformative democratic forces in Albania remains extremely limited.
" Today in Albania there is very little space to have a truly transformative democratic movement ," said Ypi, a guest on the " Apostrof Podcast ", while linking this not only to the internal political culture, but also to the country's geopolitical position.
" The fate of Albania is linked to the fate of the Balkans and the fate of Europe, and especially the process of integration into the European Union, which is a process that is not questioned by any of the political actors, places very large limits on internal transformational dynamics ," she added.
According to Ypi, this almost absolute consensus on EU integration greatly limits internal political dynamics: " This is one aspect, the fact that we don't have many choices here, we are either with the European Union, or in a context that has so many surprises that no one wants to even consider it as a possible hypothetical scenario ."
Beyond geopolitics, Ypi pointed to a deeper structural problem in Albanian political life, which is the personalization of politics. “ Secondly, and perhaps this is a question that has more to do with the nature of historical and political developments in Albania, I think that in Albania there is still a culture of personalization of politics ,” Ypi emphasized, suggesting that this comes as a consequence of the legacy of communism but also because of earlier historical models.
" If we look at everything, even after the fall of the dictatorship, even after the death of Enver Hoxha, all contemporary Albanian politics is politics that is read in the context of interactions between 3, 4, 5 individuals identified by name, and constantly the accusations, the criticisms, and the public debate always take the form that connects intervention in politics with the judgment of these actors as individuals ," he added.
In this context, she warns that discontent is unlikely to crystallize into democratic transformation. “ In this context, democratic politics when it becomes personal, when it becomes individual, when it is always linked to the leader - or the leader of the government, the opposition of a third political power - and when there is no talk of actors and projects, cannot be democratic politics ,” said Ypi.
However, despite this diagnosis, Ypi rejects the idea that Albania has no hope: " Hope is something that is related to action and as long as we raise it, pose problems, pose criticism, as long as there are voices that manage to articulate it or discuss it, discuss this as a problem, I don't believe we can say that we are hopeless ."
She emphasizes that democracy is not a single achievement at a certain moment, but an ongoing process. “ Democracy is something that is built every day, it is built with our interventions, each of us and the citizens, the media, journalists, etc. So it is a joint work as long as we remain activated and continue to do this, take this responsibility, I cannot say that there is no hope ,” said Ypi.

Te gjithe shqiptaret qe jetojne ne kete vend e shohin pushtetin si mjet per te bere pasuri. Nuk ka as parime as ideale perkundrazi. Eshte urgjente promovimi i nje klase te re politike.
