Detailed inventory/ How the State Treasury was stolen in the secret tunnel in

The robbery of the State Treasury in Krrabë took place during the months of March and April 1997, when Albania plunged into chaos and anarchy with thousands of victims and extraordinary damages.

But the theft was discovered only three years later.

Five people were given short sentences for the theft. The rest of the gold was transported to Tirana.

During the process, the head of the group for the security of the State Treasury, Arjan Bishqemi, stated that he checked the Treasury on April 24, 1997, that is, more than a month after the attacks.

But surprisingly, he did not ask for a physical inventory to be made and see if the Treasury was affected or not, so the theft was not officially detected.

The inventory that revealed that about 280 kg of gold was missing from the Krraba Tunnel was made on April 7, 2000, that is, about 3 years after the attacks on the tunnel.

But what exactly was robbed in the secret tunnel of the State Treasury in Krrabë?

The 2000 inventory found that of the 24 metal chests in which gold was placed in the form of Turkish lira, French napoleons and American gold dollars, 11 were completely empty.

While of the 97 chests each filled with 20 kilograms of silver, only 2 chests were opened, but not a single gram of silver was stolen.

Out of 24,000 napoleons of gold in total, the robbers had taken about 4,000 napoleons.

The greatest damage was suffered by Turkish liras, where out of 62 thousand of them, the robbers took about 40 thousand.

Of the 1,600 US dollars of gold that were in the state treasury, 10 of them were stolen.

The case was reopened in 2008 after the seizure of a quantity of gold worth 2.7 million euros.

It was established that this large amount of gold was part of the amount stolen in Krrabë.

The official convicts for this super theft are: Arian Bishqemi, head of the treasury security group: 7 years (sentence completed), Blerim Haka, guard of the facility: 3 years (sentence completed), Pellumb Dalti: 6 years (sentence completed sentence), Enver Hyka: 8 years (sentence completed), Ahmet Hyka: 4 years (sentence completed), Genci Lamçe (sentenced in 2008), Astrit Lamçe (sentenced in 2008).

In November last year, the Special Court ordered SPAK to investigate the assets of former President Sali Berisha and former Prime Minister Ilir Meta. The decision was triggered by the rejection of a report to SPAK related to the robbery of this Treasury.

Over the years, there have been political accusations from time to time, especially by Berisha about Meta and vice versa as organizers and beneficiaries of this serious theft.

"If someone thinks to steal the Albanians' gold and wash their hands like Pontius Pilate, they are very wrong, they have made very wrong calculations. I insist on the resignation of Ilir Meta" - said Sali Berisha in 2000.

"The other one at the end is not called Ilir Meta, but Ilir Floriri" - declared Berisha in a debate afterwards in the Parliament.

Ilir Meta himself, in an interview a few years later, denies the accusations.

But he admits that it was the opposition that pushed him to make official checks on the situation in the Treasury

"After the opposition's insistence that the State Treasury was affected, it was violated, at that time I, as the Prime Minister, asked the responsible authorities, the Ministry of Public Order, to verify the state in which the State Treasury was located.

The response of the group that did the verification was that there was no violation of the state treasury, but in fact, if I'm not mistaken, they did not do the physical inventory, but only the observation of the building from the outside.

After physical verification, it was verified that a significant portion of the coins were stolen. Then the relevant investigations were carried out and the way and the place where such a robbery was committed was verified", Ilir Meta stated.

On the other hand, Ilir Meta launched accusations against Berisha, accusing him of knowing when no one knew, especially because he was the thief himself.

"Even today, I don't understand how Berisha knew that the state treasury was stolen or violated", Ilir Meta said. (DAY)
