The refugee centers in Lezha continue to ignite debates and discontent in Rome...
The debate on the arrests of refugees that have taken place in Lezha is rekindled. As the first immigrants are expected to arrive in September, a new debate has erupted in Italy. The government will bring staff from Italian prisons to Lezha, and as a result, many penal institutions have been left with reduced staff.
Some unions have protested, pointing out that given the total chaos inside Italian prisons, there should be other priorities regarding the use of human resources.
The trade union federation of serving the sentence together with the autonomous confederation of the Italian penitentiary police say that they are stunned " by the news of the provision by which the Executive has decided to send to Albania, due to an international agreement between the leaders of the two countries, approximately fifty units of the Prison Police Corps with different roles and qualifications with the treatment of an international mission and with rules of engagement that are completely questionable and not shared with the unions .
According to the unions, there are 62,000 people in Italian prisons, while 10,700 officers have been injured during prison riots. According to them, the priority for prison organizations should be the internal framework, not the centers in Albania.
The two centers were planned and built after the agreement between the Italian government of Meloni and the Albanian government of Edi Rama signed on November 6, 2023. The structures are managed and controlled by Italy in the Albanian territory and will serve - at least on paper - for the examination of requests for asylum seekers. The migrants who will be transferred there will be those rescued at sea by Italian military ships.
The two centers, the one in the port of Shengjin and the one in Gjadri, will theoretically have two different roles: the first will be dedicated to landing and identification procedures, while the second will be for the examination of applications and simultaneous reception. According to what has been determined by Rome and Tirana, the immigrants transferred to Albania can be a maximum of 3,000 per month, in total 36,000 per year. / Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Riformista"
