The blockage of the road segment in the Librazhd area has also had direct consequences at the Qafë Thana border crossing, where around 30 trucks are waiting to cross the border. Drivers of heavy-duty vehicles report that they have been waiting in line for several days, in difficult conditions.
The cause of the situation was damage to the axis that was used as the main route for the Qafë Thanë–Elbasan movement. As a result, some vehicles were forced to divert the route and transit through the territory of North Macedonia, significantly increasing the flow at the border point and creating delays.
Drivers say they are facing a lack of basic conditions and increased expenses.
"We've been waiting here since Sunday. The weather is cold. We're waiting for the road to open and we can leave, we've been left without bread, without water. The expenses according to the company are huge, the problems are huge, we don't know much more. We hope the road will open and we can leave, we have nothing to do," said one of the drivers.
Another driver also highlighted the difficulties of the extended stay at the border: "The wait has become difficult even though we have families and children. We have been here for exactly four days, we have run out of bread, and I still have one left. We will eat it now. We are sleeping in the cabin. From here we will leave for Durrës. We hope the road will open from the Albanian side, we are waiting for that."
According to data from Albanian authorities, during the last 24 hours, 1,510 citizens have entered Qafë Thanë and 1,703 citizens have exited, which indicates an increase in traffic at this border point, which is experiencing a higher volume of movements due to the forced diversion of traffic.
