Former MP Petro Koçi, commenting on the resolution adopted by consensus by the majority and opposition today in Parliament, warned of important new developments.
According to Koçi, this consensus between the two parties is an indication that the opposition and the majority can agree to make constitutional changes. One of the changes mentioned by the former socialist MP was the reduction of the number of deputies in the Assembly, for which Koçi said that the parties could reach a pact.
"We all know that parliamentary resolutions do not have any supreme importance from a constitutional point of view, but should be taken as a positive gesture. While, on the other hand, it is certainly normal for everyone to have questions about the future. So, what could the consensus between the two parties warn of? Because everyone would fear a repeated "April 21, 2008" with the Parliament, with the number of members of Parliament. Of course, the public can expect it positively, but if we have a drastic reduction and that is also accompanied by a problematic electoral law regarding the possibility of introducing new political currents into Parliament, this would certainly be a dangerous step.
"I think that a drastic reduction of the Parliament will have to be accompanied by some other constitutional parameters that will at least maintain the constitutional spaces of pluralism at normal levels. Because a bipolarity predetermined in the Constitution I do not think is a very positive thing. I am in principle in favor of reducing the number of parliamentarians in the Assembly, but this will be viewed very carefully. So, the number should not be reduced drastically, but it should be accompanied by other measures," said Petro Koçi in "Off the Record" on A2CNN.
