Today, at the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SCOC), a preliminary hearing will be held for the file against Erion Veliaj, his wife and other persons.
The hearing is expected to begin at 09:00 where it will be decided whether or not the file will go to trial.
But, due to the tragic event recorded a few days ago where Judge Astrit Kalaja was shot to death in the courtroom, the judges have boycotted all court sessions, including today's.
It is not yet known whether the hearing for Veliaj will take place or not.
Veliaj will face five serious charges in court: corruption, money laundering, concealment of assets, abuse of office, and bringing prohibited items into the cell. According to SPAK, Veliaj is accused of passive corruption in 9 cases, in relations with several companies that, in exchange for irregular benefits in money and real estate, have obtained construction permits or public funds from the Municipality of Tirana.
His wife, Ajola Xoxa, also faces charges of passive corruption in 9 cases, also related to commercial entities and non-profit organizations. She is also accused of money laundering, failure to declare assets and concealment of income. Bushka is accused of actions that hinder the discovery of the truth.
Another defendant is Fatjon Baci, the Durrës prison guard, who is accused of giving Veliaj his cell phone during his transfer from the cell to the court, on two separate occasions.
Veliaj was dismissed from the post of mayor of Tirana on September 25, by decision of the Council of Ministers with the argument that he had not reported to duty for more than three months, since his arrest on February 10. However, Veliaj filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court, a request that suspends his dismissal and blocks early elections in Tirana until the highest court in the country rules.
