The Tirana Court has found Mario Perlleshi guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison.

Meanwhile, Martin Can's family reacted immediately after the sentencing. They said they had seen a strong ray of justice for the first time.

"This decision cannot bring Martin back to us, but it gives us a deep sense that our pain was not ignored and that his life was treated with the weight and dignity it deserves,"  the statement said.

Further, they added that today, Martin is more alive than ever in society's conscience.

"Today, after a year of pain that cannot be described in words, we, the family of Martin Can, have seen for the first time a strong ray of justice.

The court decided not to follow the recommendation of the Prosecution, which treated the event as a single criminal offense but clearly recognized what we have said since day one: the murder of Martin and the attempted murder of Luis are TWO criminal offenses.

This decision is a courageous, professional and fair act.  It is a realistic assessment of what happened: two children stabbed, two separate acts of violence, two separate criminal intents.

We thank the judges for their integrity and honesty, who chose to see the truth and not the easiest procedural path.

This decision cannot bring Martin back to us, but it gives us a deep feeling that our pain was not ignored and that his life was treated with the weight and dignity it deserves.

Today, Martin is more alive than ever in society's consciousness.

We will continue our mission with: The “Martin Cani” Museum, a place of memory and education.
The film about his life, which will keep alive his dream of football and the future that he did not get to live.
The Martin Cani Foundation, which will fight for the safety of children in schools, so that no one experiences what we went through.

"We thank all the citizens who have stood by us. Today, justice spoke clearly for Martin Cani," writes Martin Cani's family.
