Over 300 years old, the Golik bridge under threat from gold diggers and erosion

The Golik Bridge, a First Category Cultural Monument, built at the end of the 17th century, is today facing the real risk of destruction. One of the most important works of cultural heritage in the Mokra area, historically linked to the branch of the ancient Egnatia road, is being constantly damaged by illegal excavations.

For years, the bridge has been the prey of gold diggers and archaeological diggers, who repeatedly interfere with its structure and body, seriously compromising the stability of the monument. Such damage has also been observed recently, but the perpetrators remain unidentified, as the excavations are carried out during the night. The consequences are obvious: cavities in the foundations, cracks in the bridge body and partial collapse of the connecting material, damage that poses a serious risk.

In addition to interventions, atmospheric factors have also played their role. Over 300 years of exposure to precipitation, frost, and erosion have accelerated the degradation of the bridge, making the intervention of responsible institutions urgent today.

The problem is not isolated. Like the Golik Bridge, the monumental tombs of Selca, just a few kilometers away, another archaeological site of extraordinary importance, have fallen prey to looters, who dig without any hindrance, destroying irreplaceable cultural treasures./ A2CNN
