This year's Davos Economic Forum was dominated by significant geopolitical and economic developments, from clashes over Greenland to threats of trade tariffs and the breakdown of US-Europe relations, to the debate over the Peace Board.
However, beyond the "elephant in the room", several smaller but significant signals were also noticed in Davos. One of them was the absence of a photograph that has now become a tradition: the one between Prime Minister Edi Rama and his friend Alex Soros. Despite the fact that several days have passed since the end of the forum, Soros, unlike other times, has not published a single photo with Rama.
Perhaps the invitation from US President Donald Trump to Prime Minister Rama to participate in the Peace Board's founding ceremony has 'broken' the long-standing friendship. This is because during the time when the US and the Trump administration had closed all doors of communication, Rama boasted about his friendship with Alex Soros.
Today, the panorama seems to have changed. The reactivation of relations with the Trump family and the opening of a new channel of communication with the American administration seem to have forced Rama to show more caution. Avoiding photos with Alex Soros, perceived as an open opponent of Donald Trump in the US, is not a coincidence, but part of a broader political calculation.
The failure to publish a photo of Soros does not necessarily mean that Rama and Alex Soros did not meet in Davos. However, this detail clearly shows the Albanian prime minister's attempt to play on two fronts simultaneously. In turbulent times, political survival requires maximum flexibility and the ability to adapt, a "chameleon" role that Rama has proven to be able to play well.
By avoiding public exposure with Soros and showing willingness to cooperate with Donald Trump's circle, Rama is trying to build a more secure line of communication with Washington. Recognizing Trump's impulsive and transactional nature, every public signal carries weight and every photo can be interpreted as a political stance.
In this sense, the Albanian prime minister seems to be acting with the logic of risk minimization: it is not worth sacrificing a newly opened channel with the Trump administration to demonstrate a friendship that, at least for the moment, can remain out of the public eye./ Pamphlet
