The "SKY ECC" megatrial continues in Belgium with 128 defendants, accused of international cocaine trafficking. Among them is the defense of two Albanians accused of international cocaine trafficking.
Their lawyers have stated that the young people were looking for a better life.
"Paulo D. was only 22 years old when he arrived in Belgium. He hoped to find something better and find himself. He arrived in Belgium to find a job. First he did laundry, a job that didn't pay much, then he met Flavio B., an older Albanian compatriot who worked in the same drug laboratory. The latter had back problems that prevented him from performing some tasks in the apartment where cocaine was processed. So Paulo D. accepts this job and, yes, he makes a lot more money than in the back of the kitchen where he does the washing up," his lawyer said.
However, the experience only lasted a few months, from "July-August to October 2021" when the police made a wave of arrests after decrypting the encrypted messages "Encrochat" and "SKY ECC".
The person is also being prosecuted for possession of weapons without a permit. Therefore, the criminal lawyer spoke about the unity of the will since it was not a question of committing another type of criminal offense.
"It was just a small hand," the defense emphasized. "My client is confessing. He played a minimal role and has already served 20 months of detention." Paulo D.'s lawyer therefore asked the court to consider a simple term for what exceeds detention. "Does it make sense to return someone who has been (re)located in Albania for six or seven months in prison? I ask you the question and I will read it carefully", concluded the lawyer.
