Mitsotakis continues the pressure on Albania: Don't stop Beler from

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during a conference for the Greek media in the context of the Thessaloniki International Fair, was also asked about the "Beleri" issue.

Mitsotakis demands that the elected mayor of Himara be allowed to take the oath, even from prison. I do not interfere in the trial of Albanian justice, says the Greek Prime Minister, but "the removal of Fredi Beleri's opportunity to be sworn in as mayor, even with the status of a detained person, constitutes a violation of the rules of the rule of law".

"Today marks 129 days since the imprisonment of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri. In addition to Greece, the European Parliament has also requested his release, while the US State Department has also positioned itself. What are the further moves of Athens regarding the games and stunts of Tirana in front of the Greek minority at a time when Albania is also a candidate country for the EU for almost 9 years?", Mistotakis was asked by the Greek journalist.

During his speech, he stated that not allowing Beler's oath creates big problems in our bilateral relations and will have wider consequences if this policy continues during Albania's efforts to get closer to the European family.

"I have been constantly positioned on this issue, which unfortunately casts a shadow on bilateral relations with Albania and reverses to a large extent the important progress we have made in the previous four years. I must tell you that I am particularly concerned about the fact not only of the imprisonment of the elected mayor of Himara, but above all the fact that even today Albania refuses to do the obvious, to give him the opportunity even from prison to was sworn in as mayor. It is a message that I have conveyed in every way to the leadership of Albania.

What I am saying refers to an administrative decision, I do not interfere in the judgment of Albanian justice, it would be very difficult and improper for me to do so, but the removal of Fredi Beleri's opportunity to be sworn in as mayor , even with the status of a detainee, constitutes, in our opinion, a clear violation of the rules of the rule of law, creates major problems in our bilateral relations, and I think that there will be wider consequences if this policy continues during Albania's efforts to to get closer to the European family.

I have deeply embedded the memories and experiences from my visit to Himare at the end of last year. I believe that the Greek national minority, known as a national minority, should feel that Greece has an ally for the obvious, which is the protection of its rights. And we talk about property rights, we also talk about equal rights to participate in the political activity of Albania. I wish and hope that this issue will be resolved as soon as possible. In any case, I will not stop raising this issue at the European level or even directly with Prime Minister Rama the next time I meet him",  answered the Greek Prime Minister.
