Human metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus that causes cold and flu-like symptoms. Doctor Ilir Alimehmeti was invited to the show "Review" this Sunday on Euronews Albania to talk about this issue.
He emphasizes that this virus existed before, but was identified in 2001.
" This is a virus that we have identified since 2001 in the Netherlands, it has been there before. The virus does this work seasonally, every winter and spring. Like any virus, there are some slightly high and low seasons. After concerns, cases have been reported in several countries of the world, 10 to 12% of cases of respiratory infections, are from HMPV. Of which 5-16% may develop lower respiratory infections that need more careful treatment," he said.
According to Alimehmeti, this type of virus does not need a specific treatment or vaccine, but not leaving aside the care to have a healthy immune system.
" We have no place for panic and we are not talking about something new. There is no scope or need for a vaccine or antiviral treatment. Like any respiratory virus, it tends to affect young children, the elderly or people with illnesses more. On the other hand, it is not preventable, you just have to keep your immune system as healthy as possible ", said doctor Ilir Alimehmeti.
