Skateboards kill, the number of accidents from electric scooters increases,

Scooters, this simple and fast means of reaching the destination has become a danger for the people who use them, the pedestrians, but also the drivers.

Accidents from their use have doubled in the last year. In Tirana, despite the fact that the municipality has removed parts of many roads for them, the dedicated lanes are not respected. Police say this is one of the most frequent violations, but not the only one.

"We have encountered a lot of problems with skateboards and electric scooters as they sometimes use places not designated for driving a skateboard. They do not use the dedicated lane that is exclusively for them and cyclists, but cross the carriageway on different road axes, get in between vehicles and become a potential source of danger for road accidents. Sometimes they don't respect traffic lights or pedestrians ," said Arben Bakalli, traffic commander.

Almost every day, scooter or monopathy accident victims appear at the Trauma Hospital. If last year 214 people sought the help of doctors, this year their number has so far gone up to 554. According to doctors, traumas have long-term and disabling consequences, mainly in teenagers and young people.

"There are broken bones in the upper or lower sides, there are head traumas, from mild to severe traumas, with hemorrhages or brain damage that are even fatal. There are also traumas of the chest or abdomen region. They are significant and life-threatening traumas. Every year the traumas are multiplying, they are going with a frightening upward trend, since last year the number of traumas from these scooters has almost doubled. The ages are from 15 to 25-30 years old," said Erjon Qato, head of the orthopedics service at the Trauma hospital.

According to the police, such tools are also used by under 16-year-olds, while protective helmets are almost never worn. Under these conditions the appeal of white shirts and blue uniforms is the same.

"Be careful with speed, respect protective measures, traffic rules" , added Qato.

"There are cases and under 16 years old, our appeal is for them to be over 16 years old because they have a more appropriate orientation for the infrastructure. They should use protective helmets and knee pads to be as safe as possible for themselves", emphasized Bakalli.

Europe has clear rules for electric scooters. Paris removed them from circulation a year ago, while in Albania their use has increased and the fine of 1,000 lek seems not to have alerted their drivers at least to respect the dedicated lanes./Abcnews
