Abdyl Xhaja, one of the most prominent personalities of Albanian economy and politics in the last decades of the 20th century, has passed away after a long and incurable illness at the age of 82.
Born on March 13, 1943 in Elbasan, Xhaja completed his studies at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Tirana in 1965, starting his career as an economist in the industrial enterprises of his hometown. He stood out in the management of the Elbasan Metallurgical Plant and later in the central structures of the industrial sector.
In the early 1990s, Xhaja became an important part of the country's government, serving as Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Industry, Mineral Resources and Energy from 1991 to 1997. As a member of the Democratic Party, he was elected MP in 1996 and actively participated in the National Council of this political force.
Even after leaving active politics, Xhaja continued to contribute to the field of economics, as an advisor to the Foreign Investors Union and the Albanian Geological Survey. For his international contribution, he was honored with the title of “Honorary Citizen” of the state of Oklahoma in the USA – a rare recognition for an Albanian citizen.
His passing is a great loss for his family, friends, and all those who knew him closely as a dedicated professional and model citizen.
