Former Minister of Finance Arben Malaj has described the passing of former Socialist leader Fatos Nano as a sad day.
Malaj praised Nano's contribution to the modernization and structuring of the SP, which according to him was the biggest challenge after the '90s.
" It is a sad day because he was a leader and a politician of a different kind that Albanians loved. What I would appreciate in Nano's profile was his visionary nature, he was clear about where Albania wanted to go in the challenges after '97. He has an extraordinary contribution because he restructured the SP and modernized it, and in his profile he will be the leader who will always be remembered for the democratic spirit and the structuring of the SP was the biggest challenge after the '90s. A team was formed that took over the restructuring. Albania does not have a communist party because the SP was well structured and people found themselves there and did not immediately have to create a party. Modernization, the democratic and liberal spirit brought the left together to take responsibility for governing the country after '97 ," said Malaj.
As one of Fatos Nano's closest associates, Malaj recounted to A2 CNN his most difficult moments, the political lessons he learned from him, and the differences between a leader like him and Berisha.
" The most difficult moment was when the voting for ministers was blocked, due to quarrels within the SP. That day Nano gave me a political lesson. Why is politics in Albania difficult? He addressed everyone he met from the Socialist Party as an institution and in the end he told me do you understand why this country is difficult? That everyone considers themselves an institution and he knew the psychology of politicians and people, but he had his own soul and there were no permanent enemies. In the leadership we had a debate and Ilir Zela was debating with a critical spirit and the situation was de-escalated when Nano intervened and said; Ilir, we are condemned to work together even when we don't like each other. There was always that space where a person should feel valued again. Not like in other political parties. At that time, journalists had a conclusion where Nano's style differed from Berisha's: if Berisha gets off the bus and even if it passes by, he doesn't pick you up, while if you get off, Nano stays there because he comes to pick you up again. "They found the simple philosophy to make a difference ," Malaj said.
According to him, Nano is the last leader who allowed debate and competition by vote. Malaj emphasizes that Nano had ambitions but accepted reality even when he withdrew from his ambition for president.
" The last leader of a major party that allowed debate and competition by vote. Now it is the relationship between autocracy and democracy. Internal democracy is limited. He wanted the post of president and tried twice, but the second time he withdrew. We saw that he had no support from either the SP or other parties and did not follow the path he had ambitions for, but he accepted reality ," said Malaj.
He also praised the socialist leader for the fact that he did not seek revenge after being released from prison, but sought socialist peace.
" I learned a lot from Nano's political career. As soon as he got out of prison, at the parliamentary group meeting, some socialists thought that the leader of the Democratic Party should be held accountable, and I thought that Nano would find the opportunity to take revenge, but what Nano said was very significant; you have mythologized me and I want to be demystified. If you tell me to put the opposition leader in prison, I will not create other myths to remain part of the quarrels and difficult situations. I have borne those sufferings at my own expense, we must bring social peace ."
