There have been hearings at the Constitutional Court for Mayor Erion Veliaj. The marathon hearing lasted for about 7 hours and Mayor Erion Veliaj himself was present.
Since his arrest on February 10, this was Erion Veliaj's first public appearance, who also took the floor during the presentation of his request for the annulment of the Government's decision to dismiss him, as well as the subsequent decree by President Begaj, announcing partial elections in Tirana, suspended by the Court itself.
With the closing of the hearing, Veliaj was escorted by the police to the detention facilities in Durrës. Meanwhile, after receiving the parties' conclusions, the court has withdrawn for a decision, while the President of the Constitutional Court, Holta Zaçaj, said that the date and time for the announcement of the decision will be announced later.
In the marathon 7-hour session, all parties expressed their views and arguments regarding the issue.
Veliaj requested that the Constitutional Court accept his request, arguing that the dismissal from the Municipal Council and the Council of Ministers was unfair, as his absence from office did not come from desire, but from inability.
The representative of the Council of Ministers was asked to accept the request for Veliaj's dismissal, with the justification that he was dismissed according to the law, because the government convinced the Municipal Council to remove him from office after he was absent from work for three months, based on the Law on Local Government.
Meanwhile, the Presidency emphasized that it is not up to it to address the conflict between the Government and Veliaj, but only the part of the decree, which was issued based on administrative procedures, since according to the president's representatives, the decree for the elections in Tirana is based on the dismissal made by the Council of Ministers.
It now remains to be seen when the constitutional body will meet to make the final decision, as Holta Zaçaj said that there will be no decision-making today and the decision is expected to be made next week.
