Coastline in Vlora polluted, suspected detergents or cooking oils; vacationers

Since Saturday morning, a part of the coastline of Vlora, specifically the segment from the area known as "Rrapi" to the seaside villas, has been significantly polluted, causing concern to vacationers and residents of the area. A white and oily layer is observed on the surface of the water, which, according to residents and vacationers, resembles detergents or oil residues used by the kitchens of private entities in the area.

Residents say that this is not a new phenomenon, but this time the situation has become more visible and more worrying. According to them, some of the private entities, such as restaurants or accommodation units or even vessels operating along the coastline, which are suspected of uncontrolled dumping of oily waste and detergents, may be responsible for this pollution. There has been no official reaction from the local authorities or the Environmental Inspectorate yet.

"The sea is beautiful, there is a lot of pollution. Sewage discharges. A ship may have dumped its waste. It is not good at all, even from a tourist perspective. It is placed here in the hope that it will be better, cheaper, cleaner."

A lot of pollution, from businesses here. From hotels, water and everything, is dumped there. Detergents are dumped, there may be sewage as well. There has been pollution for two years, there was none before.

Detergents from bars are dumped into the sea. We had a very clean sea for a week. We can't prove it, I washed up at 05:20, the sea was very clean, then the waves started and they took out the garbage.

"The water here has been crystal clear. For the last two years it has been very polluted, even when it clears up a bit, there is still residue, bubbles or who knows what. It could be the residue from the restaurants washing dishes and what they pour into the sea, it could also be sewage," say the vacationers.

The coastline of Vlora is one of the most important tourist assets of the country, and any such case of pollution not only damages the image of the city, but also endangers the local economy that relies on tourism. Responsible institutions are expected to react to guarantee the cleanliness and safety of the beaches, in a tourist season that is at its peak./ Shqiptarja.com
