At risk of collapse, ARRSH suddenly closes Milot bridge; Dom Gjergj Meta:

One of the most important traffic bridges in the north of the country, the old Milot bridge over the Mat River, has been permanently closed to vehicles, after serious damage was found to its supporting legs. According to the Albanian Road Authority, the damage is a result of a lack of maintenance and the removal of inert materials near the structure, which has significantly weakened the stability of the bridge and made it dangerous to use.

This decision comes at the height of the tourist season, causing chaos on the Milot-Lezhë axis, where the flow of vehicles, especially from emigrants returning for vacation and tourists, is quite high. Long queues and blocked traffic are making the situation unbearable for residents and drivers, while an alternative traffic plan is lacking.

The harshest public reaction came from the president of the Albanian Bishops’ Conference, Dom Gjergj Meta, who called the decision “a sign of the absolute incompetence of the institutions dealing with roads.” “How is it possible that in the middle of the tourist season, at the peak of the arrival of immigrants and the organization of weddings, the Milot Bridge is closed?” he asked, criticizing the lack of any warning or transparency about the timing and manner of the intervention.

“Is the condition of the bridges being checked in time to intervene preventively, before it reaches this critical point?” he added, raising doubts about the lack of monitoring and institutional responsibility. On the ground, citizens await a solution with uncertainty, while the bridge blockade continues to create tension and deep dissatisfaction.
