Italian politics has brought the migrant camps in Gjadra back into the spotlight, while the Meloni government has once again come under accusations from the left...
However, the policy pursued by Giorgia Meloni to combat illegal immigration seems to be bearing fruit.
The model of camps in Albania, based on the agreement that Meloni signed with Edi Rama, has aroused the interest of other EU countries. Many EU members have approached the Balkan country seeking a similar agreement, but have been rejected by Edi Rama, who has no intention of entering into similar agreements with other countries, Italian media write.
With an operational capacity of 96 places in total, there are currently 82 foreigners in the Gjader center and, in total, from 11 April 2025 to 20 April 2026, 527 individuals have passed through this center. All of them had received repatriation orders and had previously been held in national centers. For more than half (270) of the foreigners who passed through the Gjader center, the detentions were not validated and almost all of the foreigners brought to Albania, within a few days of their arrival, submitted applications for international protection with subsequent release after the invalidation decisions. In addition, there are 40 who have been returned to Italy for health reasons with certification of unsuitability for life in the community.
The Gjader center has surgeons, infectious disease specialists, doctors and a 24-hour psychiatric service, with clinics operating for both the CPR and the asylum seeker center. There have been 83 repatriations so far, with the last one being repatriated on Monday evening.
Among those held at the Gjader center are people with strong criminal records.
According to Italian media, a self-proclaimed Iranian citizen who arrived in Albania from Macomer is sheltering in Gjadra. Over the past 10 years, he has committed countless violations of the law and has been convicted several times, but most importantly, he attacked a police officer and sexually assaulted a woman on a train.
Also a self-proclaimed Algerian citizen who, since 2006, has been convicted and arrested several times for a variety of crimes, including drug trafficking, receiving stolen goods, illegal weapons, theft, assault, kidnapping and aggravated robbery.
Furthermore, a self-proclaimed Senegalese national being held in Gjader was an active participant in a revolt at the Bari Civil Privacy Center, in addition to committing other crimes outside the facility.
Also being held in Gjader is a self-proclaimed Bangladeshi national arrested in flagrante delicto in 2023 for committing sexual acts in front of a child on a train, and a self-proclaimed Moroccan national with a criminal record for, among other things, sexual assault, threats and resistance to a public official, as well as damage to property.
